For a long time, art did not concern itself much with the topic of space. However, since new forms of expression such as performance, installation and film found their way into the realm of art in the 1960s, space has become a vital theme and experience in modern and contemporary artistic output.

After a four-year absence, Rudolf Staechelin’s (1881–1946) renowned collection of paintings has finally returned to Basel. After a first concentrated exhibition showing a series of highly successful dialogues with masterpieces from the Beyeler Collection, the nineteen impressionist, post-impressionist and classical modern works will be presented at the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen near Basel from 26 October onwards. These remarkable masterpieces by Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Ferdinand Hodler, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Camille Pissarro and Auguste Renoir will be on display in new and surprising combinations alongside groups of works from the Beyeler Collection until 5 January 2020. Particularly deserving of mention is the gallery showing works by Hodler and Mark Rothko, highlighting how Hodler’s idea of parallelism in abstract expressionism was later taken up elsewhere. The new display of the Foundation’s collection will also incorporate works by, for instance, Louise Bourgeois, Wolfgang Tilmanns, Roni Horn, Georg Baselitz, Richard Serra and Alberto Giacometti. #BeyelerCollection

The Fondation Beyeler's main goal is to bring art and spectator together. Through our guided tours and workshops, we do not only share knowledge about artists, works and epochs, we create above all a space in which to deepen observations and exchange different views, perceptions, thoughts and feelings. Our goal is to let stories and therefore connections develop between the artwork and the viewer and it's especially important to the Fondation Beyeler that children and young people also be able to find their very own stories and connections.
Shop
This is the perfect place for art lovers, visitors and gift seekers. Since 1997 the Fondation Beyeler Shop offers a selection of exhibition catalogs, posters, special editions and contemporary books about art, architecture and design, as well as watches, accessories and other design articles.
