Passion for Art
The collector couple Hildy and Ernst Beyeler assembled selected works of classical modernism over a period of fifty years, parallel to their successful gallery activities. In 1982, the collection was transferred to a foundation and in 1989 it was presented to the public as a whole for the first time. The collection today comprises around 450 paintings and sculptures and documents a very personal view of classical modernism shaped by a distinct understanding of quality.
Foundation Purpose
The Beyeler Foundation owns the Beyeler Collection. Its purpose is to make it accessible to the public by operating the museum. The foundation also aims to awaken and maintain young people’s interest in art.
