Publications

On exhibitions, artists, works in the collection

The publications of the Fondation Beyeler build on a rich legacy. Although Ernst Beyeler gave up the antiquarian book trade in 1952 in favour of art, his love of beautiful books remained. Early on, a high-quality catalogue was published for every exhibition at his gallery, and this was always a matter he personally oversaw. True-to-colour reproductions of works and sophisticated layouts printed on fine paper – with this, he set standards in the art world. Today's publications continue this tradition.

Diverse programme for a broad audience

Large-format images complemented by essays on art-historical contexts, careful design, and high-quality printing distinguish the exhibition catalogues of the Fondation Beyeler. In doing so, we make sure that the catalogues and texts are interesting and accessible to a broad audience – an aspiration that Ernst Beyeler himself already pursued. The publications of the art education department are likewise committed to this idea.
In addition to exhibition catalogues, the publication programme includes monographs on individual artists, documentary films, a museum guide for young and old, and the publication «Was ist Kunst? 27 Fragen, 27 Antworten» (What is Art? 27 Questions, 27 Answers). This is aimed specifically at young people and offers an entertaining introduction to the subject of art. The booklet series «Ansichten» (Views) allows art enthusiasts and educators to engage in depth with individual works from the Fondation Beyeler.

The publications can be purchased at the museum, and many of them are also available online in the Beyeler Shop (öffnet in neuem Tab).
