The Düsseldorf artist Thomas Schütte (b. 1954) is an eminent figure in contemporary art. Following his monographic exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler in 2014, a representative selection of his works was added to the museum’s collection. Now his sculptures and works on paper are to be shown in this constellation for the first time.
The human figure stands at the center of Schütte’s art. His expressive busts feature idiosyncratic and characteristic physiognomies, which only attain their final form in the course of modelling. In this creative process, the artist experiments with different materials and dimensions, including the bases, which he regards as an integral part of his works.
Schütte’s watercolours include almost exclusively portraits, which come to life in brief but very intensive sessions with the respective sitters. Accordingly, they are based on a completely different approach to the sculptures. It is in this tension-filled interplay between sculpture and drawing and the immediate juxtaposition of the materials that the multifaceted range of Schütte's work comes into its own.
The Schütte gallery was curated by the “Young Think Tank,” which also developed an extensive accompanying program of events.
The “Young Think Tank” was established in 2013 to allow young employees of the Fondation Beyeler to connect with one another. It addresses issues they care about, seeks to open new perspectives onto current topics, and develops ideas, concepts and projects.
Due to the continuing interest, we have extended the opening hours. On 9, 16 and 23 January, the museum will be open until 8 pm.
