SUMMARY:Friday Beyeler: Phyto Futures – Forms of Being Alive
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be alive? And in what shape and form can life appear? As part of Friday Beyeler, the artist and researcher Monica Ursina Jäger gathers voices from nature, art and science to reflect on different forms of being alive. Phyto Futures is an invitation to listen to microbial chatter, to tune in to the rhythms of forests and build new ideas of inhabiting the planet with plants, microorganisms and minerals. The program includes a video screening, a sound performance and conversations.

Working with drawing, collage, installation and video, Monica Ursina Jäger’s practice unfolds through a multidisciplinary reflection on concepts of space, landscape, and architecture that investigate the manyfold relationships in ecosystems. Fluctuating between the intuitive, narrative and factual Jäger scrutinizes processes of transformation, re-arrangement and mediation by unfixing the boundaries between artistic and scientific knowledge production. Her works trace the entanglements in post-natural landscapes, the agency of organic and inorganic matter and the complexities of time. 

Monica Ursina Jäger is a permanent faculty member at the Institute of Natural Resource Sciences IUNR, Zurich University of Applied Sciences ZHAW. Since 2016 the transdisciplinary team develops new forms of dialogue between artistic practices and scientific research to tackle issues related to ecology, climate change and planetary regeneration. Projects include urban ecology, outdoor exhibitions and climate resilient gardens.
