Exhibitions

Matisse | 22.9.2024 – 26.1.2025

In autumn 2024, the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen/Basel will hold the first Henri Matisse retrospective in Switzerland and the German-speaking world in almost 20 years. Featuring around 80 works from major European and American museums and private collections, the exhibition will highlight the development and diversity of the artist’s groundbreaking oeuvre.

Daughter of freedom | 26.8.2024 – 5.1.2025

Alberto Giacometti and Ferdinand Hodler are at the heart of the Fondation Beyeler’s new collection display. Both Hodler’s late Alpine landscapes and Giacometti’s frail-looking human figures raise the question of perspective.

Northern Lights | 26.1. – 25.5.2025

Early next year, the Fondation Beyeler will be presenting the group exhibition ‘Northern Lights’. It will feature around 80 landscape paintings by artists from Scandinavia and Canada, created between 1880 and 1930, including masterpieces by Hilma af Klint and Edvard Munch. What unites them is the boreal forest as a common source of inspiration.

The Key to Dreams | 16.2 – 4.5.2025

In a worldwide first, the Fondation Beyeler will present Surrealist masterpieces from the Hersaint Collection. The exhibition will feature around 50 key works by artists such as Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, René Magritte, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Man Ray, Dorothea Tanning and many more.

Vija Celmins | 15.6. – 21.9.2025

The Fondation Beyeler will devote a comprehensive solo exhibition the artist Vija Celmins (*1938, Riga), who masterfully works in painting, drawing, and sculpture. Celmins’ visual language is both subtle and powerful. The exhibition will be the most significant presentation of Celmins’ work in Europe in almost 20 years.

Yayoi Kusama | 12.10.2025 – 25.1.2026

In the autumn of 2025, the Fondation Beyeler will be the first museum in Switzerland to devote a retrospective to renowned Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama (*1929, Matsumoto). Organised in close collaboration with the artist and her studio, the exhibition will offer a complete overview of Kusama’s more than seven-decade career.

Narrative café – Invitation to join the voyage

TUESDAY, 14 JANUARY, 2.30–4 p.m. | Do you prefer far-flung destinations or exploring nearby locales? Based on the works of Henri Matisse, the famous French painter and traveller, the narrative café is inviting visitors to discuss their own (life) journeys, be they small or large, internal or external.

The Fondation Beyeler's main goal is to bring art and viewer together. In our guided tours and workshops, we do not only share knowledge about artists, works, and epochs. We create above all a space in which to deepen observations and exchange different views, perceptions, thoughts, and feelings.

Film and Game "Das Dingsda im Museum"

The museum game invites children and adults to discover the works of art based on questions in a playful way and in exchange with each other. It can be borrowed free of charge from the Art Shop of the Fondation Beyeler for your museum visit and is suitable for every exhibition. Only avaible in German.
