Focus Exhibition

This fall, the Fondation Beyeler will be presenting You are the Weather (1994–1996) by the American artist Roni Horn (*1955). In the one hundred portraits of a young woman, the viewer encounters the same face time and again in the water of an Icelandic thermal spring. Since 1975, the artist has regularly travelled to the Nordic volcanic island, whose unique landscape is still an important source of inspiration for her today. You are the Weather shows not only how changeable we are as human beings, but also how the volatility of the weather is reflected in a hundred, subtly different facial movements.

Booklet of the exhibition 2016
"Large enough to lose yourself in it. Small enough to find yourself"

The catalogue accompanying the exhibition “Roni Horn” (02.10.2016–01.01.2017) includes prominent works of the artist from the past twenty-years, as well as new works, which will be shown for the first time at the Fondation Beyeler. In constantly new ways they appear before the viewer as a process of becoming that is again set in motion by the world, moving beyond any kind of fixed identity.

Fragile Identities

The Art Edition “You are a Form of Me” (2016) shows a detail from “Th Rose Prblm” (2015/2016), the very recent series by US artist Roni Horn. For these works on paper, Horn has cut up watercolor pictures of idiomatic English phrases and reassembled them into a total of 48 colorful new sentences with often bizarre textual meanings.
