From May 22 to November 12, 2017, the Anglo-German artist Tino Sehgal (*1976) will be present at the Fondation Beyeler with an exhibition designed as a series of six successive presentations. Each work will be shown either in the museum’s gardens or in one of its galleries. Sehgal’s works, which he calls “constructed situations”, will be interpreted by male and female artistes; the situations are immaterial and fleeting, the thing that truly matters being the viewer’s experiencing of the situation. The point of departure for the exhibition is This You, a work acquired two years ago for the Fondation Beyeler’s collection.

Tino Sehgal was born in 1976 in London and is an Anglo-German artist who lives in Berlin. He studied economics in Berlin and dance at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen.
The artwork itself is immaterial and fleeting, what matters being the experiencing of the “situation” itself. His male and female “interpreters” ideally have an affinity for dancing and singing, and are prepared to present his choreography in accordance with his rules. Sehgal avoids the words “performer” and “performance” because the viewer is part of his works. The natural encounter and the experience are what count for him. He therefore uses the words “situation” and “interpreter”.
Tino Sehgal’s artworks only come into being when a viewer experiences them. He uses male and female “interpreters” who make contact with viewers through movements, spoken words and song. His works are nonetheless for sale and can be shown an unlimited number of times as long as his orally communicated instructions are respected.
In all, six of Sehgal’s central “situations” will be shown.

Tino Sehgal’s works leave no physical trace. There is no documentation relating to them and he forbids photographs, videos, printed information and publications. Anyone wishing to buy one of Sehgal’s situations negotiates orally with Sehgal before a notary rather than receiving a written contract of sale.
