April 29 – September 2, 2018
In the spring and summer of 2018, the Fondation Beyeler is devoting a joint exhibition to Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) and Francis Bacon (1909-1992). These two outstanding protagonists of classic Modernism were friends but also rivals, whose vision strongly influenced the art of their own time and still exerts a compelling fascination today. Giacometti and Bacon were like twin lighthouses, standing apart, but each aware of the signals sent by the other. This is the first museum exhibition to examine the relationship between these two major artistic personalities. At first sight, their respective bodies of work appear disparate and unconnected, but the forthcoming exhibition also uncovers surprising similarities. Presented in juxtaposition, their art appears in a new light.
