Unique museum

During the architecture tour, you will learn the story of its making — from Ernst Beyeler's initial idea to the inauguration in 1997. Structural features, the relationship between interior and exterior space, the subtle lighting and the unique dialogue between architecture, art, and nature are also discussed.

From drawing board to art space. Renzo Piano and the Fondation Beyeler

In pictures and words, this fascinating book tells the story of the Fondation Beyeler museum from the perspective of the architect who designed it: Renzo Piano. A wealth of previously unpublished photographs document the museum building in its Riehen setting. We see interior and exterior views of the building, in the midst of the park in springtime and in the winter snow, details of the roof structure, and exhibition spaces with works of art and visitors. These photographs are complemented by exclusive drawings by the architect from the planning and construction phase.

In his essay, Renzo Piano gives us a very personal account of the design process and reveals how closely Ernst Beyeler was involved in the planning. Piano takes us all the way through the building of the museum, from initial ideas and sketches, through the practical challenges of construction, to the inauguration of the Fondation Beyeler. He also underlines the significant role played by Ernst Beyeler as a contributor of ideas in line with his clear vision for the project, and as a keen-eyed monitor of the construction process.
