Friday Beyeler

To mark its 25th anniversary, this autumn the museum is ringing in the weekends with the new “Friday Beyeler” event series. From 16 September to 16 December 2022, the exhibitions, the park and the restaurant of the Fondation Beyeler will remain open until 10 p.m. on Fridays, welcoming all friends of the arts and inspiring encounters.

Under the title “I Hear a New World – 14 Miaows of the Future”, students and teaching artists from the Institute of Art Gender Nature at FHNW Academy of Art and Design in Basel transform the museum foyer into a creative platform for contemporary art, featuring live performances, films, talks as well as music, poetry and dance. Each Friday evening is designed as a micro-performance festival, bringing together different art forms and insights from a quarter of a century of the Fondation Beyeler to reflect on what we can appreciate and protect through art. The starting point for the performative explorations is a seemingly invisible passage underneath the Fondation Beyeler on whose grounds there was once a cat museum.

The “Friday Beyeler” events are included in the museum admission. The performances are ongoing and can be visited at any time.

To the Tickets

Inspired by the former cat museum, which originally occupied the grounds of the Fondation Beyeler, “I Hear a New World – 14 Miaows of the Future” combines art, history, poetry, music, performance and dance. The program of the Institute Art Gender Nature focusses on the joint love for art and how art can provide individuals and communities with an experience of worlds more open and broader than our own everyday experiences. From Covid, to the ongoing wars, to the climate crisis– narratives and images of the impossible, narratives of narrow paths, smaller worlds and scarcity surround us. The Institute Art Gender Nature wants to address how art and artists activate creativity, fiction, and the possibility of imagining hopeful futures together. In this context, “to hear a new world” means to be open and receptive, to come together with the art works and artists, gaining a sense of togetherness and belonging that makes loneliness and anxiety fade into the background. The aim of the program is to provide us with a sense of life that is lighter allowing us first to dream, then to plan.

“I Hear a New World – 14 Miaows of the Future” will feature contributions by Phoenix Attala; Paloma Bosquê; Raffaela Boss; Noa und Lara Castro; Wren Cellier; Hana El-Sagini; Onome Ekeh; Gerome Gadient: Alma Herrmann; Charlotte Horn; Astrit Ismaili; Ana Jikia; Sophie Jung; Tobias Koch; Elise Lammer; Quinn Latimer; Floris Maniscalco: Claire Masset; Elena Matamoro; Laurie Mlodzik; Anina Müller; Ingo Niermann; Jacob Ott; Joan Pallé; Pauline Quartco; Filipa Ramos; Nadiia Rohozhyna; Nelson Schaub; Alessandro Schiattarella & Manuel Justo; Fabio Sonego; Hannah Weinberger and more.

The Institute Art Gender Nature is dedicated to visual arts education. We are a public institution with one hundred students spread across a three-year bachelor’s programme and a two-year master’s programme. Embracing nature and social justice lie at the core of our curricula. We further organise a varied schedule of events, including international symposia, a series of discursive events titled “Art Taaalkssss”, and an art commission programme open to the public. We understand the mission of art and artists as an essential contribution toward imagining and experiencing freedom and possible social futures. Friendly collaborations with foundations such as TBA21–Academy allow us to expand our aims and learn ways of understanding the oceans from activists and scientists.
