Rudolf Stingel

The Fondation Beyeler will devote its summer exhibition 2019 to contemporary painter Rudolf Stingel (born in 1956 in Merano, Italy, he lives and works in New York and Merano).

Like few other artists, he probes and interrogates the status quo of painting. From his very beginnings in the late 1980s, Rudolf Stingel has approached painting in a conceptual and self-reflexive manner, exploring its possibilities and media-specific limits through the interplay of artistic strategies, materials and shapes. Alongside various series of abstract and photorealistic paintings, he creates large-scale works made of styrofoam, cast wall hangings, as well as participative spaces covered in carpets or insulation foil that may be touched and treaded on. His works manifest both the random traces of time and deliberately placed references to their own process of production.
