One-day seminars for museum staff and educators from other institutions

Promoting an interest in art among youth and young adults is a central aim of many museums. Exchanges through dialogue with a young audience are possible at various levels. On the basis of existing and new projects at the Fondation Beyeler, these one-day seminars take a closer look at the needs, wishes and expectations of the young. What should museums be doing to attract young people? What can be achieved with analogue methods, and how can digital media be used in specific, targeted ways? How can museums develop young styles of communication and publishing? With workshops, discussions, and examples of best practice, participants are encouraged to share their experiences and put forward ideas for new projects.

An insight for teachers and members of the public interested in art

Igniting the enthusiasm of children and young people for art is a key aim of the Fondation Beyeler. This short "insight" course provides an opportunity for teachers and others interested in art to take a look behind the scenes at the museum. A discussion of general questions about art and art education is followed by an introduction to the participative, interactive, and dialogue-oriented formats used by our Art Education department, with a chance to try out various museum games. The encounter with art works in situ gives rise to further questions for group discussion. Our intention is to offer you a stimulating insight into art education and encourage you to visit the museum with your school students or group of young people.

For teachers and members of the public interested in art

The focus of this four-hour event is on engagement with art and the free exchange of ideas. A tour of the museum is followed by a more detailed consideration of individual galleries and art works, enabling participants to exchange observations and views.

Art explores materials and media but it also presents feelings and thoughts. It can show us how others see the world and offer insights into our own perceptions, with the result that the encounter with the work in the museum becomes an encounter with ourselves. Works of art invariably give rise to arguments for and against, with a range of views and questions that can be discussed in front of the pictures and sculptures: What is the point of art? What makes it so interesting? How is it created, seen, and interpreted? This event, with a participative emphasis, is conducted in dialogue with the participants, taking account of specific questions, topics or wishes.
