The Fondation Beyeler, an International Institution
The Fondation Beyeler is active not solely as a collection of international standing and an exhibition venue in Riehen, but is increasingly represented beyond the bounds of Basel and Switzerland. This wider presence primarily takes the form of loans from the collection of Ernst and Hildy Beyeler, which go to support exhibition projects by other museums. For us, every request for a loan is an acknowledgement of the importance of our collection, which contains many key works; indeed, these are often even featured as the highlights of shows curated by other institutions. Naturally, before consenting to a loan, it first has to be ascertained whether the work can make the journey at all. Only then do we look at the subject of the exhibition and at the institutions making the request – most of them bodies who lend works to us for our own exhibitions.
Over the years, loans between museums have given rise to a sort of international diplomatic network, within which the Fondation Beyeler plays an influential role. Many of the museum’s departments are involved in this process, from directors and curators to conservators, registrars and those responsible for art handling.
The presence of the Fondation Beyeler at the two most important art fairs in the calendar, Art Basel and Art Basel Miami Beach, also plays its part in raising the museum’s international profile as an outstanding cultural institution. Similarly, many of the exhibitions shown at the Fondation Beyeler or organized by it provide a regular opportunity to cooperate with major institutions all over the world.
